Discovery of Helium

Unlike most elements, helium was discovered in space before it was found on Earth.

In 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen observed a unique yellow spectral line while studying a solar eclipse. Around the same time, English astronomer Norman Lockyer identified the same spectral signature and proposed that it belonged to an unknown element present in the Sun.

The element was named Helium, derived from the Greek word "Helios", meaning Sun.

Interestingly, helium was not discovered on Earth until 1895 when Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay isolated it from uranium-containing minerals.
